The A.B.C. course in Automotive Engineering which consists of a 2 year course in the fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology. The East Berkshire Skills Centre was approved by the regional A.B.C. inspector in 2007-08, who commented that the Centre was 'innovative' and 'fit for purpose'.

The Course

Subjects covered will include:

  • Brake & Steering Systems
  • Routine Servicing
  • Tyre & Exhaust Skills
  • Liquid Cooling Systems
  • Vehicle Power Units
  • Customer Care
  • Health & Safety in the Garage Workshop

The Course is very practical but with an IT based series of assignments and work expirience.

The course provides an ideal introduction to working within the Motor Vehicle Industry and can be a first step towards a career as a Motor Mechanic/ Technician.

Added Projects

To help our students along the way we have devised many interesting projects to keep them focused, these include:

  • Modifications on vehicles which seem unachievable at first (V6 Citroen Engine in a Picasso)
  • Mini Cooper rebuilt from scrap
  • Old Volkswagen Golf modified with a 3.2 Engine
  • A Mini Motos rebuild (miniature motorbike)
  • Day trips to car shows, track days etc

Goals

Our goals as tutors are to mould young technicians and send them into the work force with the understanding and attitude to succeed in at a higher level in college or in apprenticeship. The course is equivalent to 4 GCSE’s and are highly respected within the trade. However, students should be warned that there will be some theory lessons and lots of work writing up practicals as evidence in their portfolios.
